Artist Biography
Abir Mukerjee (b. 1986, India) is a visual artist based in Mohali, India, whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, watercolour, and drawing. Mukerjee is best known for his intimate and emotionally resonant figurative works that explore autobiographical and psychological narratives rooted in familial life. Drawing from lived experience, he creates poignant portraits and domestic scenes that preserve memory and emotional depth through a distinctive visual language. With formal training that includes an M.A. in Painting from Wimbledon College of Arts, London, and both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Kala-Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, Mukerjee brings a rich academic foundation to his artistic exploration.
Mukerjee’s subject matter is profoundly personal, often depicting members of his family through life painting and sculptural vignettes. His work is characterised by a reflective engagement with memory, loss, and care, unfolding in psychologically nuanced tableaux. Furthermore his practice expanded into miniature sculpture and diorama-making, drawing inspiration from handmade figurines crafted by his grandmother. These small-scale scenes crafted from materials such as polymer clay, wood, plastic, and electronics portray fleeting familial moments imbued with tenderness and symbolic weight. This shift marks a significant evolution in Mukerjee’s practice, merging the tactile immediacy of sculpture with the quiet introspection of memory.
Abir Mukerjee has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Annual MA Degree Show, Wimbledon College of Arts, London (2017), Lewisham Arthouse, London (2017), and the 3rd Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition (2012). His work has also been shown at Sarah Khan Contemporary Art, Switzerland (2009), the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and Nandan Gallery, Santiniketan. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship (UK, 2016), the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (Canada, 2016), and the Inlaks Fine Arts Award (2016). Mukerjee has participated in artist residencies such as the What About Art Residency, Mumbai, and the British Council–V&A National Residency at Meherangarh Fort, Jodhpur, further affirming his position as a thoughtful and deeply engaged contemporary artist.
